Who doesn’t remember their youthful days, and look back at that time when you were young, with a sense we were indestructible, and a feeling we could get away with almost everything?
And as carefree, that we felt the World out there was for us to take?
Then we grew up, and we matured, and come to our senses, and as my father liked to say, we no longer thought we could drink the whole Ocean in one gulp.
Now assuming all of you readers are mature and responsible people, let’s make a brief checklist.
Poverty, War and Terrorism, Climate Change, Drug Abuse, Disease, Animal Abuse, Murder, Racism, Pollution, Population Growth, Global Warming, Unemployment, Sexism, Raping, Totalitarianism, Religious Fundamentalists, Severe Income Disparity, Refugees, Violence, Child Abuse, Obesity, Irresponsible Government, and Power, Gun Control issues, Mass Shootings, Fascism, Ignorance, Self Absorption, And spending too much time online.
And that are just a few of the problems that come to mind after Covid-19, that its not over by any means.
So the question, not what the next crisis will be?
But Which of all the above will be next?
Maybe a meteorite out of space?
A nuclear War?
Global Hunger?
Mass extermination of Species?
Maybe the stage is set for our Human Specie to disappear, or simply to grow up, and act like responsible adults, and do what it’s sensible, and proper to do, rather than act like spoil brats, bent on continuing their usual irresponsible bad behavior.
We all live under the same heaven, and our World it’s finite, we are all interconnected on a subtle level, and what affect one, affect us all, we like it or not. We as a Human specie we are breaking the boundaries of a World in equilibrium, time to do something about it, rather than ignore the warning signs, and keep the madness going.

Very meaningful, and true. Poverty and being online too much are the 2 that fitted me. I was born in to poverty just after the war in England. Our staples were, what was grown in the garden, sugar sandwiches, and not much else. All my life I have appreciated the smallest of things.
Before 1990 a quarter of the World lived in extreme poverty, now supposedly around 10%, but very likely it will surge up, with all the unemployment around the globe because Covid-19 crisis, and possibly the year 2020 will be very grim in outlook, because not only the victims of the decease, but the economic crisis.

Una lucha tenaz de Usa, China y Rusia por hacerse del control del mundo. Unos empresarios inescrupulosos que usan la pandemia para hacerse de pingües ganancias en la ventas de productos sanitarios defectuosos y con precios inflados. Los sistemas de salud son una calamidad en muchos países. No hay personal médico preparado ni suficiente para atender en los hospitales. En fin, con esto están llevando a la humanidad por un despeñadero y parece que a nadie le importa. Será que quieren un exterminio disimulado con la pandemia para ordenar sus intereses? Vaya uno a saber.

maybe we should start bringing our children up in the way that they develop more personal responsibility and intellectual creativity! This means we should train them already during the compulsory school years to do this and we should give them more freedom to achieve progress in subjects they are really interested in. I am also convinced that our societies need more opinions by philosophers and not only politicians and business people, who are only interested in making money and frequently not so much about our environment.

The Philosopher, Richard David Precht has recently been very recommended to me and then I watched the interview on the Swiss German channel with him, which has a very good reputation for this kind of discussions and was very impressed. Here he speaks about his newest book “Anna, die Schule und der liebe Gott” (something like, Anne, school and dear God). Mr. Precht wants to completely revultionize the school- system, but he doesn’t hesitate to express his opinion on many topics. He has written many books and is professor at two universities. His biggest success seems to be “Wer bin ich” (Who am I) I have in mind to read this one after “on the edge of the nest”!!
Should you really be interested in understanding it better, I will try to help you in translating some of the discussion.
I think that the world need people like him, who make us think!

The video translation is not good, but I gather that Precht is an advocate of a new civil society. He stands philosophically close to the American communitarianism, the idea to democratize the society with higher civic sense of community.
He considers the obligation of economy and politics for constant economic growth as damaging.
In the debate about the thesis of Thilo Sarrazin, Precht views the accusations toward the migrants as a diversion with regard to the more fundamental question about the distribution, the growing gap between rich and poor, and the establishment of moral-distant settings in the upper class, as well as the under class.

It’s a pleasure to see that you tried to find out more about the philosopher R:D:Precht and his convictions, despite the fact that you could not really understand much of the interview mentioned here above and his idea about revolutionizing the school system.
I try to mention two of his important points and then we can see that there are
connections with what you mentioned:
In German and Switzerland families become money from the companies they work for according to the number of children they have. Our philosopher is of
The opinion that there are many families, which do not really need this money. Therefore, he would like that this money is not paid any longer to these people, but is directly transferred to the schools/institutions. To me there seems to be a very big discrepancy with the USA!
He wants to change the actual school system by making children more intellectually responsible and creative by abolishing, for example the marks, but promoting much more and earlier- this means after 6 years during which they learn the essential things- the children’s own talents, develop their own thoughts. He wants to do this to help more to poor children and not his own, who seem to get already a lot of input. He is of the opinion that children nowadays are piled up with subjects and material, which remain superficial. His goal is to prepare children for the future challenges and a future satisfactory life. Life doesn’t exist of subjects but of things one is really interested in and therefore it is important to make projects and so self-discipline will develop.
Last but not least, the professor tries to put many subjects in connection!

Thank you Martina for your lengthy explanation, I agree with his points, education needs to be specific to each child, rather that one model fits all, I hear some rich people’s schools they have more personalized methods of teaching, but of course it requires of many good teachers, and less children per teacher, to really work, and that cost money, and the why only rich people can afford it, I guess rich countries can afford it.
As for example in my country I was lucky to go to the best school, and have the best teachers in the country, but still my classroom we were near 50 students per classroom, and we all took the same assignments, until High School and we had only 4 choices to choose from Law, Chemistry, Engineering, and Biology, and not much choices of careers to go into,at least at the time.
In my view parents are very important too, my Paternal Grandmother was a teacher, and she educated her children at home, consequently my father and aunts, were readers , and well informed, my father pass that to me, and I can say his influence was more definitive to shape my love of reading, and studying.
I reflect now, that shaped who I am today.

Well, we know the human condition, and impermanence, but there is no reason, to not seek a balance in life as well, and to enact in our present, an ideal of justice, and fairness, despite the lack of it.
Quixotic if you want, but fair, as it should be. 🙂
The stage is really set to simply grow up and stop adoring the wrong values. We couldn’t be living more incorrectly as we are. We fall for wrong idols, we try to achieve things which are so unimportant in the global and eternal context.
People cannot take this lesson. Most do not have internal strength to accept the reality.
Yes, my whole point, we as Nations, and individuals have personal agendas that are totally immature, not fit for sensible adults, that bring the usual chaos a house full of spoil brats, bring into.
Well it’s just time to become responsible adults, and act accordingly, at all levels of society, around the World.
Although, I recognize will not be an easy task, people in power should realize reshaping our society through proper education, will be the key to make this change possible, and to recognize that money, and the economy, are important, but no above our main asset, that is our people, our main resource, and the quality, of them a resource we cannot do without, period.
Governments who do not care about their people and look at them as sheep to be fleeced, they will be condemned to have a perennial problematic country, as simple as that.

I remember cringing during the ’80s here when the mantra “Greed is good” was very popular.
People CAN change…but hopefully not too late. My father is an example. He was one of those rare black Republicans for many years. But in his later life he switched to Democratic–even before the maniac who’s in the White House right now got there. He just slowly realized his desires for the world did not, in fact, match the same desires Republicans had…but boy, that took a long time!
The school thing is a great focus too. Another huge problem that needs to be addressed in schooling is cultural differences and perspective and also historical inaccuracies and gaps in information. We need to learn about Plato and Caesar as much as we do about Onesimus, a slave who introduced inoculation to the newly forming Americas, the ethnically rich background of Alexander Dumas, the first elected Hispanic US senator (born in 1859) and the black founding figures involved in early America. (Black and Latino truths are especially important here in the U.S.)
People might say, “Why does it matter what race people are?” but I would venture that question usually comes from those who never felt disenfranchised, diminished, or even outright erased from history. When kids see a different story–the one where their people ALSO made great discoveries, inventions, and contributions to society–even creating civilization/society in many cases–then they grow up not feeling isolated and insignificant but empowered and confident….and who knows what they’ll offer the world as THAT enthusiastic person instead of the disinterested, ambivalent one who never knew the truth?
Well, whoever ignores there is an ideological war going on, and that racism is doing fine, and well in America, either is blind, and theft, or belong to the privilege class, and therefore isolated from the suffering of others.
In America we also suffer from ideological isolation, and xenophobia, and care little for looking outside our borders, and see how other people live, or what they are doing, imagining that only in America things are of any importance.
Our triumph in WWII went to our head, and refuse to see the World changing, meanwhile we become stagnated in ideological hegemony, and refuse to acknowledge, our immigrants contribute to our richness, not only economically, but culturally, as for example the way we eat, our own communities, becoming a mirror of the World outside from our borders, Americans do not emigrate to other countries, in mass, except for old retirees, looking for a cheap place to live, and milder weather.
But with our economic crisis, the shell, its about to break, and we will see many young men, and women leaving America as migrants to other Nations in search of opportunity, its just a matter of time.
Also the influx of large communities of immigrants in the US will change radically the ethnic landscape of the country, where hopefully will bring a change of values, we already had our first black president, a woman will follow, and diverse ethnicity will be so common, hopefully we will be able to put back in the past, racism for good.
Of course this may take some years yet, but is surely coming, as the next day will come, as years, and generations come, and go, and the Roman Empire we read in books and do movies about.

If you’re not aware of it already, it’s an extremely conservative news channel that generally praises Trump and conservative causes all day long. It was surreal to see the story there. Hello Mr Anaya. Very good post! What confounds me about this whole situation is that for some reason we did not act as a global community for all those crises you mentioned, yet for this one the CV19 we are all acting. How does one explain that? Well, to me it seems that we will act whenwe are told to (in this case we were told to) and we will not act if we are not told to (we were not told to in the case of others). What I mean with ‘told to’ is that we will not unless we are not given any other choice. In fact this already becoma evident to me some time ago when I was writing about environmental destruction. However, this brings another question to he fore: Why is it that it is only with this CV19 situation, which has a 97% survival rate, that we are not given any other choice? Whatever the answer, it seems quite clear that humans are not able to direct themselves (except for some rare individuals) but they need to be directed – and they will go wherever they are directed – for better or worse. Well, I’m not sure what we can do with that, but it does not inspire much hope in humanity saving themselves from themselves.
Here is an interesting documentary I saw yestersday about environmentalists and how unaware they are of what they actually support or don’t support – I think you will see what I mean and how that ties in with the rest of my comment above:

Sadly depressing but true, it seem the whole Human race, is gone come to a rude awakening, more of the sooner, than the later, right?
The only one thing we humans can do is reduce our population growth, that’s it.
The rest, as the video clearly shows, has not work, the sad thing that for unlimited progress, they need unlimited growth, and on a finite planet that’s impossible, at the root of the problem is the fact we all need to consume in order to live, and that’s how money is made, the more people consuming, the more money to be made, these may be food, or energy.
Energy= Food= Living=Consuming=Bio-degradation, and all kind of maladies, not only to our planet, and human beings, but for everything that lives.
And they need you to be alive, to keep consuming!
In other words we need to be less, so we all can fit in our habitat.
I Had a teacher that used to say:
“Mother Earth, will fix us, she is gone get angry with us, and sooner or later from nurturing Mother she will turn in to the Goddess Kali!”
Kali is the Hindu goddess (or Devi) of death, time, and doomsday and is often associated with sexuality and violence but is also considered a strong mother-figure and symbolic of motherly-love.
So, like a good parent, she will teach us a good but hard lesson!
I will not moralize, about who is doing the right thing and who doesn’t, we all are in the same boat, and all of us will meet our day of death.
Then our wanderings, money, power, and even worries, will be useless.

Thank you, Jean-Jacques, personally also think governments around the World, should be looking on ways to reduce population growth, rather than economic expansion, of course in a wise, and measured way, not all counties have the same problems, about population, but certainly will not hurt to make people aware small families live better, and cause less degradation, and of course a change of lifestyles.
By no means I am expert, but I can see clearly, little or almost nothing it’s made on that regard, some years ago EF Schumacher wrote a book “Small is Beautiful” It resonated for a while, then disappeared when “Greed is Good” mentality took over.
Schumacher argues that the modern economy is unsustainable. Natural resources (like fossil fuels), are treated as expendable income, when in fact they should be treated as capital, since they are not renewable, and thus subject to eventual depletion. He further argues that nature’s resistance to pollution is limited as well. He concludes that government effort must be concentrated on sustainable development, because relatively minor improvements, for example, technology transfer to Third World countries, will not solve the underlying problem of an unsustainable economy. Schumacher’s philosophy is one of “enoughness”, appreciating both human needs and limitations, and appropriate use of technology. It grew out of his study of village-based economics, which he later termed Buddhist economics, which is the subject of the book’s fourth chapter.

Thank you for your response, Mr Anaya. To me it seems we need a complete mind-shift, one that would be completely counter-intuitive to the modern mind – one that would involve being prepared to move away from technological solutions, rather than seeking them out – I think this is our folly: we are looking for ever more complex solutions to complex problems that are the result of too much complexity. The counter to that can only be simplicity and simple living – and in that we we will have to – at least partially “go back in time” (return to a life of fewer conveniences that reply upon modernity itself which relies upon fossil fuels – and even renewables reply upon them – as we saw in the MM doccy. I also agree that tech transfer to poor nations won’t do much in the long run, except for introducing a reliance upon technology. Sustainability itself is an oxymoron, because no modern living is sustainable … The other factor that rarely gets mentioned is that not all nations or countries are equally responsible for the destruction, consumption or overpopulation. Nations all play different roles in all of this so it’s not really that we have a global problems, but rather we have localised problems that are made everybody else’s problem. So in effect localized or regional problems are globalised because nobody wants to take responsibility. Its true that there are also globalised benefits, but at what costs? Thinking globally instead of local is one of the reasons why we are not able to move forward with soltutions, which can only be bottom-up, rather than top-down. (but I think nobody really wants to hear that).

A poignant and timely post. I agree with Martina, that we need to start with our children, give them the backbones and necessary understanding to change our course. Which would include encouraging responsibility and creativity.
Well, we find ourselves in the proverbial situation that in many other languages is described as: “To be between the Hammer, and the Anvil:” or in English Between a rock and a hard place, so if something need to done, is not in doubt, the question is when, and at what cost?
Here in the comments you can see the terrifying video by Jeff Gibbs and produced by Michael Moore, all so far we have being doing it’s to lie shamelessly, and painting a good image, to fool people into inaction, and conformity, I agree we should teach children to know and do the right thing, but I am afraid by the time they will be in charge, they may want to put our current generation in front of the firing squad for our irresponsibility!

And of course, you are right. We can’t really wait for the next generation. Maybe we need more catastrophes like the corona pandemic to wake us up. At least it has been good for earth, if not for the human race.
Well, at least they are saying our quarantine, is giving a break to the Earth on the burning of fuel, so you are right on that one.

Yes I too agree that a change can only be brought about through the right type of education, and especially the education of our children and young people. From what I observed here very many privileged people received a rude awakening when Covid-19 fear started to spread and the lock-down became a new reality. All the buying of ‘stuff’ stopped because no shops were open. Many folks had the opportunity to do more thinking because they did not have a job to go to. My question now is if things will really change or if the majority of people will go back to their old ways of spending and more spending or will we all become responsible in every way, responsible consumers, responsible as a society.
I have found your post very interesting and thought provoking and I am very happy to have been able to read all the comments too, and will check videos. I tried to listen to Richard David Precht, however he speaks to fast for me, my German is a little rusty. But I could read up on him or get one of his books as it really interests me what he believes about schooling. Thank you Martina Ramsauer, very interesting comments.
Well, I guess some of us may get it, others may not, but certainly infusing values, and virtuous behavior through education, it’s a key factor.
Every government on Earth should try to implement, teaching every young generation, without skipping here, to there, otherwise we will have a whole generation who go back to zero, and become a future problem, whose consequences, not only the whole of mankind will have to deal with, but our Planet as well.
