So many times I’ve photographed stories that show the degradation of the planet. I had one idea to go and photograph the factories that were polluting, and to see all the deposits of garbage. But, in the end, I thought the only way to give us an incentive, to bring hope, is to show the pictures of the pristine planet – to see the innocence.

As much as I gree with Mr. Salgado my idea it’s one of contrast, by showing the beautiful sight of Mother nature, and the ugly, destructive, and sinister side of Men.
There’s not two ways about it, no conservation efforts, rapacious rape of Mother Earth in the name of progress, and profit, or every effort to keep pristine ecological systems in place?
Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.
My question is, can we find a solution to this mess we are in?
Hardly a day go by when we do not hear of an ecological disaster of one type or another one, in their absence, at least doomsday predictions of more to come!

Yes, we are all descended from the selfish gene. How can we collectively change? One aspect, poverty: Capitalism fails to reward true labour, instead it is the profiteers who accumulate exaggerated rewards which they hoard like worthless impotent chalices. Like air, wealth needs to circulate.

Well, we hope that out of the hundreds, or maybe thousands, who browse this, maybe one, or if we are lucky, a few, it may bring them change, never underestimate the power of words, as a young man when I become a vegetarian, I turned many people into vegetarianism, just by talking, and setting an example, to this day many have remained active, there’s no reason why in any given day, people may wake up , and start doing the right thing.
Of course there’s a lot to do yet, yourself doing a great work in your blog, keep up the good fight, and do not be discourage, there’s great power to the word.

Now, this is my belief, if we are here, it’s not by chance, a believer or a non-believer would have to admit that even if everything it’s the product of chance, and happenstance, we posses reason, and consciousnesses, and the capacity to judge what’s profitable to us and what’s not.
Obviously messing up our planet will not benefit any of us on the long run, otherwise Mankind, will be a small footnote, on the record, after all less than two minutes time will hardly matter at all and new forms of life will take our place, after all those troublemakers dinosaurs are gone, as well, and that will be the end of the story with that little pest, named humans! 🙂

“I am part of the rain forest protecting myself.” I love this idea, though it is difficult to think of myself as part of nature since most days it seems so distant from me. Perhaps it is this disconnect which keeps us from comprehending our actions.
It’s a problem of being living in cities, or large populated areas, with little connection to Nature, we sort of live in an urban landscape isolated from what we call ‘wild Nature’
an expression that reveals how estranged we are from our roots.

I suppose that in order to survive one needs to learn ‘moderation’, yet the world teaches one to consume and overindulge. Since this is the case, I try to do with what I can and benefit from the wisdom years could bring. Each human being has a dilemma with this issue, whether accepted or not. In this day and age, all humans have become victims of their own doing.
Well Maria, most of us Humans, we live in ignorance, and therefore we lack virtue, and therefore devoid of Wisdom, knowledge most we have, since we are aware of the problem, but to apply the lessons of that knowledge it what makes the difference, and there’s the place for Wisdom.
I rather talk about raising consciousness, despite the obvious relationship between a World order, based on the now obsolete system we live as ‘consumers,’ their needs, and all that economic pyramid, of those who hold the status quo, by their vested interest on it.
I guess events will finally overtake, and subvert those needs, one way, or another, regardless of the consequences, as I commented above, in Geological time, we have been here just a minute, and seven seconds.

Serious problem, definitely. Governments cannot solve it. It is corporations, greed and profit taking. One should make all of these disappear and we could talk about return to a normal life. We know that profit taking won’t give up. That is the aspect that pays no regard to maintenance of climate and keeping the Earth alive. They will take off to another planet, you watch. The catastrophe becomes evident when we are between 3 and 4 degrees higher than we should be, and the temperature raise at 5 degrees is the absolute chaos and end. If nothing changes, we could be there in about 80 more years.
Yes, unfortunately plutocrats, in the form of business, and corporations are in fact the law of the land, since they control every decision of our now obsolete, irrelevant. and almost totally inefficient governments, a new form of social contract it’s badly needed.
As for them taking off for another planet, I wish they would do it now, and stop messing with us, but I am afraid in the Solar system, Earth it’s the only thing we got. And as for intergalactic travel, well good luck, our science as advance as it seems today, is still in diapers!

I was taught that this world is indeed Eden and encouraged to tend to it as such. When we do so, even suffering seems to change in meaning. Still, we live in an age when the world is seen as something to be left or transcended. This creates great suffering for all beings.
The World it’s divided between those who see Earth as Sacred, or at least see our Codependency, and see Earth as our provider, and are willing to fight for it, and those who by their ignorance, callousness, and selfish motivations, can’t see nothing but a place to be exploited, to profit by it, regardless of the killing of the goose, or hen if you will, of the story, who produced the golden eggs!
I guess as the totality of Mankind, those who look to preserve, rather than destroy, are in the minority, and therefore the current state of destruction of our environment.
As to when most people will wake up, and smell the coffee, and stop doing the wrong things, and adopt the right attitude to save our environment, and by doing so save ourselves?
We can only hope, and work as hard as we can to move people out of their complacency, and denial.

So you can say, we are young, very young, and we need to mature as a specie yet.
Believe many things can go wrong in the meantime, but at some point we will reach full responsible maturity, and will be able to live in a wise, and measured way, at least I hope so…
But as, when we will be of that age?
Your guess, it’s as good as mine, our eyes may not see it.

I have a view of consciousness and life upon this wonderful planet far removed from the norm, and yet I see many parallels in your writings within this majestic post.
I have not hope, but, a belief that man will transform himself and the planet. However, this will take articles, such as yours, and individuals with enormous determination to lead the way.

Yes, I know we are here for a purpose, and as you say, some people may find that far removed to their thinking.
And yes it will take a lot of work, from some, or many people, to hopefully lead that change soon.

I believe that change has begun. Many are now protesting at the status quo! The ‘groundswell’, so to speak, has begun in earnest.
It will take ‘leadership’ by many, however, without the many dissatisfied majority joining in the protest, change cannot occur.
And ‘protest’ is occurring worldwide.
Yes, we have reached a point now, most people it’s aware things cannot go as usual, and ready to take action.

Perhaps we are living in the abandoned lot
next to where Eden use to be ?
Well, from my point of view, we never abandoned Eden, it was a symbolic way to say we didn’t look at it, with the same eyes, just like Adam, and Eve did after eating from the forbidden tree, before the expulsion, in a way being throw out of Eden, refers to the fact they no longer had the primordial innocence, a sort of a state of bliss they had, the idea it’s we have to recover that primordial innocence, to be able to be back in Eden, not an easy task, considering the current state of affairs, we live in the World.
